The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Skylar was founded in 2017 in Los Angeles with a clear mission: create fragrances that smell like California without the chemicals that trigger reactions. Magic Bloom emerged from that commitment, with perfumer Sarah Horowitz‑Thran tasked in 2021 to capture the fleeting magic of a spring garden after a light rain. The composition uses mandarin orange leaf and yuzu to evoke wet citrus peel, pairs apple blossom with honeysuckle to suggest blossoms caught mid-bloom, and anchors it all in clean musk and sandalwood so the scent breathes rather than sits.
Skylar chooses each note not just for its smell but for how it interacts with skin chemistry. The yuzu and mandarin orange leaf were selected because they stay bright even when diluted for clean formulations. Apple blossom and honeysuckle were chosen for their ability to smell natural rather than synthetic at lower concentrations. The drydown of musk, sandalwood, and white amber was calibrated to give lasting presence without the heavy sillage that can overwhelm sensitive noses or small spaces.
The evolution
Magic Bloom begins with a bright, almost sparkling citrus overture courtesy of mandarin orange leaf and yuzu, quickly joined by the watery sweetness of pear. The fragrance then opens into its heart, where apple blossom and honeysuckle soften the citrus sharpness, joined by magnolia for a more grounded floral presence. As the composition dries down, musk and sandalwood add clean body warmth while white amber provides a quiet, powdery softness that lingers close to the skin.
Cultural impact
Since its 2021 debut, Magic Bloom has become a go‑to scent for those seeking a fresh, clean fragrance that doesn’t trigger sensitivities. Wearers often cite it as a staple for office environments and weekend brunches, noting its subtle mineral drydown sets it apart from other clean‑beauty offerings. Its inclusion in several ‘vegan fragrance’ round‑ups highlights the growing demand for inclusive, skin‑friendly perfume in the modern market.
