The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 1999, Shu Uemura, the Tokyo-founded beauty house known for blending makeup artistry with Japanese minimalist principles, partnered with French perfumer Daniel Maurel to create a fragrance that mirrored their ethos of clean precision. Maurel received a brief to deliver a scent aligned with the brand's balanced aesthetic, one that would feel as considered as a perfectly applied line of eyeshadow. The result was Shu Uemura 029, a fragrance built on restraint and structure rather than excess.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of balance, pairing bright citrus and herbaceous elements with restrained florals and a dry, mossy base. Each layer serves a purpose, building toward a composition that feels complete without relying on abundance. The opening herbs prepare the senses for the heart florals, which in turn give way to the structured base, creating a logical progression that mirrors the careful precision of Shu Uemura's makeup artistry.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with the bright immediacy of lemon and mandarin orange, quickly joined by the herbal depth of rosemary and artemisia, creating a crisp aromatic introduction that feels both fresh and grounded. As the opening notes soften, the heart reveals itself through geranium and jasmine, with rose and ylang-ylang adding delicate floral warmth. Pitosporum contributes an unusual green nuance that distinguishes this heart from more conventional floral constructions. The drydown marks a return to the fougere tradition through oakmoss and cedarwood, while sage echoes the opening herbs and patchouli adds earthy persistence, settling into a finish that remains composed and understated.
Cultural impact
Since its 1999 debut, 029 has quietly earned a following among aromatic‑fougere enthusiasts who appreciate its garden‑fresh opening and mossy drydown. Though discontinued, it often appears in niche forums as a reference point for balanced herb‑citrus compositions, and is frequently mentioned alongside Shu Uemura’s later Fleur de Source as a testament to the brand’s consistent, understated elegance.
