The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
United Arab Emirates is Roja Dove's tribute to a land where fragrance is not a luxury but a birthright. Named for the country itself, this composition translates the sensory landscape of the Emirates into liquid form. The brief was simple: capture opulence without restraint, heritage without nostalgia. Bergamot and artemisia open the composition like a cool morning in the desert, herbal, bright, unexpected, before the heart blooms into the richness that defines the region. Rose de mai, jasmine, and ylang-ylang compose a floral heart that is unapologetically opulent, supported by clove and pink pepper that add warmth without sugar. The name says United Arab Emirates. The fragrance says everything that name implies.
What makes this composition distinctive is the interplay between cool and warm. The artemisia and bergamot opening creates a freshness that initially seems at odds with the oud, rose, and spice foundation, but that tension is the point. The cool herbal note acts as a foil, preventing the floral-oud heart from becoming heavy or cloying. As the fragrance evolves, the bergamot fades and the artemisia's bitter, aromatic quality emerges, bridging the fresh opening to the warm heart. The blackcurrant bud adds a subtle green-fruity note that keeps the florals from sitting too heavily, while the cumin and pink pepper introduce a spiced warmth that builds gradually rather than announcing itself.
The evolution
The opening arrives quickly, bergamot's citrus brightness first, then artemisia's bitter-green edge arriving moments later to cut the sweetness. For the first thirty minutes, there's a tension between cool and warm that keeps the fragrance alive, unpredictable. The bergamot fades but the artemisia lingers, evolving from sharp to aromatic as the florals begin to assert themselves. By the second hour, the rose de mai has taken command. It's not a delicate rose, it's a rich, almost indolic rose that blooms warm and full, supported by jasmine and ylang-ylang that add creaminess without sweetness. The clove and pink pepper build across the heart, adding a spiced warmth that grounds the florals. As the heart begins to settle, the base notes emerge: oud and cypriol wood first, their dark, resinous character arriving before the softer elements fully develop. The guaiac wood and patchouli add earthiness, while benzoin, frankincense, and labdanum create a warm, resinous foundation that wraps around the oud.
Cultural impact
Part of the Aoud Collection, United Arab Emirates stands as one of ROJA London's most ambitious compositions, a fragrance that wears its influences openly: Arabian oud, British opulence, and a floral heart that refuses to apologize for being beautiful. The strong ratings across scent, longevity, and sillage reflect a fragrance that delivers on its promises.
