The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Air de Fio No 4 is part of Pupa's Air de Fio series, a fragrance collection with a lighter, more romantic register. The series explores a softer approach to scent through white florals and fruit, anchored by a woody base that gives the composition a warmer, more grounded feel beneath its airy floral top. No 4 specifically leans into that romantic side of the collection, balancing delicate white florals against fruit notes and a base that carries more weight than the typical sheer floral. It's the kind of composition that reads as quietly considered rather than declarative, with each note working to give the whole more body without tipping into heaviness.
What makes No 4 distinctive is the interplay between its floral-powdery heart and that mahogany-patchouli base. The mahogany adds warmth and structure underneath the softer notes, giving the drydown a grounding quality that distinguishes it from pure powder florals. The plum and jasmine do the heavy lifting in the middle phase, with the plum contributing a ripe, rounded sweetness and the jasmine lending its creamy floral presence to bridge the bright opening and the deeper base.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes are all about the violet, red apple, and freesia. There's a crisp, almost crystalline quality to it, like biting into cold fruit with a powdered sugar dusting. The Baccara rose adds a dewy freshness that keeps the sweetness from becoming too confectionery. Around the thirty-minute mark, the jasmine and plum take over. The jasmine is creamy and white, with a softness that doesn't read as indolic, and the plum gives it a fleshy, ripe quality that softens the bright opening into something more rounded. Lily of the valley adds a green, watery lift that keeps the heart from getting too heavy. By the two-hour mark, the mahogany and patchouli have settled in. The musk softens everything further, and the drydown becomes a warm, slightly woody, skin-close affair.
Cultural impact
Air de Fio No 4 sits within the broader Air de Fio collection, a fragrance series that expanded Pupa's presence in the scent category. It reads as a soft, romantic floral, the kind of composition suited for daily wear rather than reserved for special occasions. The mahogany-patchouli base gives it more structure than a typical powdery floral, lending a grounded quality beneath the airy top notes. That combination of softness and substance gives it a versatility that works across different contexts, from office settings to casual evenings.
