The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Charna Ethier launched Indolice in 2009 from Providence Perfume Co., a house built entirely on natural, botanical ingredients. Mushroom wasn't a safe choice. Neither was spikenard. The cep note, Boletus edulis, the porcini mushroom, appears in the opening. The combination of natural materials and unexpected choices defines this fragrance, demonstrating that botanical ingredients can achieve complexity and depth typically associated with synthetic compositions. Ethier's approach prioritizes plant-derived raw materials, allowing the cep note to serve as a distinctive anchor that sets this fragrance apart from more conventional offerings.
The combination of mushroom and jasmine creates an intriguing interplay in the composition. One is earthy, the other floral, and the two are brought together through basil and coriander, which function as a bridge: cool, aromatic, slightly sharp. The coriander doesn't sweeten. It grounds. Meanwhile, the jasmine carries indolic character, the kind that reads as slightly animalic on some skin, narcotic on others. The frankincense and spikenard in the base reinforce the earthy-animalic axis throughout the wear.
The evolution
The opening hits fast. The cep arrives punchy and organic, almost umami-like on first spray. On some skin it reads as mushroom; on other skin it leans savory, almost meaty. The coriander keeps it cool. Thirty minutes in, the jasmine emerges, indolic, heady, sweet in a way that feels dangerous. The basil weaves through. The promised sweetness arrives, but it's not innocent. As the hours pass the mushroom fades and the jasmine darkens, becoming something more animalic than floral. The frankincense and spikenard emerge as the earthiness recedes. The drydown settles into smoky moss and quiet resin, with oakmoss holding the composition together. Sillage stays moderate throughout. This isn't a room-filler. It's intimate, close, the kind of fragrance you smell when someone leans in.
Cultural impact
Indolice has attracted wearers who appreciate its unusual combination of mushroom, indolic jasmine, and earthy chypre base. The fragrance offers an organic quality that differs from many mainstream compositions, appealing to those who seek something beyond conventional floral or woody profiles. Its uncompromising character resonates with enthusiasts who value distinctive botanical fragrances that challenge expectations.
