The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sweet Tonka arrived in 2024 as part of Precious Liquid's Limited Collection. Richard Herpin composed it around a single, deliberate idea: take tonka bean and build outward with materials that share its quiet richness rather than fight it. Bergamot and lemon open the door, their bright citrus notes offering a clean, almost effervescent introduction before receding into the composition's warmer layers. Rum absolute, cinnamon, and benzoin fill the room with a spiced, resinous density that grounds the opening brightness in something more substantial. Bourbon vanilla and Indian sandalwood close it, lending a creamy, woody depth that lingers long after the citrus has faded.
What separates this from a standard dessert fragrance is the resin layer. Labdanum and Peru balsam add a sticky, almost candied depth beneath the vanilla, giving the composition weight and warmth that pure sweetness can't achieve on its own. The presence of these balsams creates an almost confectionary density, as though the vanilla has been folded into amber rather than left airy. Rum absolute and cinnamon bring a boozy, spiced quality that pushes the tonka's natural warmth in a direction richer and less overtly sugary than a typical gourmand.
The evolution
The fragrance announces itself at its brightest in the opening, where bergamot and lemon cut cleanly through, accompanied by a flicker of rum underneath that reads as warmth more than alcohol. That citrus presence is brief, a bright prelude rather than a sustained statement, and it gives way quickly as the composition settles into its middle act. The tonka bean and benzoin take over, pulling the scent into a dense, resinous sweetness that feels rich and substantial. Jasmine appears in the middle notes, contributing a subtle floral texture that weaves through the resinous warmth without ever asserting itself as the main event. As the wearing progresses, vanilla absolute and Indian sandalwood assert their dominance, smoothing the composition into a creamy, woody sweetness.
Cultural impact
Sweet Tonka by Precious Liquid sits in a curious pocket of perfumery where gourmand warmth meets the bright citrus burst of bergamot and lemon, with rum lending a caramel-edged lift to the opening. The tonka bean at the center of the composition carries associations that go beyond its current role in perfumery, carrying a vanillic sweetness that has long made it a valued material in fragrance work. Sweet Tonka builds its profile around that sweet-spicy axis without veering into cloying territory, the resins and balsams doing the work of giving the composition weight without tipping it into overwhelming sweetness.
