The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Richard Herpin built Iris Sorbet around a material he calls the most valuable in his palette: iris. Precious Liquid's 2023 release treats that rarified ingredient like a dare, pairing its cool, powdery depth with the bright snap of blackcurrant, grapefruit, and raspberry sorbet. The tension is deliberate. Iris carries centuries of perfumery weight, and Herpin offsets that gravity with fruit that reads almost like a chilled confection. Carrot seed adds an earthy, slightly vegetal backbone so the sweetness never tips into cloying territory. Rose and high-grade musks bring the soft, almost skin-like embrace that defines the drydown.
Iris is among the costliest raw materials in perfumery. The rhizome takes years to mature, and the butter extracted from it carries a violet-tinged powderiness that few other naturals can replicate. The choice to frame it through a sorbet lens, rather than the traditional suede or lipstick register, reveals a perfumer more interested in mood than heritage. The carrot seed and grapefruit function as structural counterweights, preventing the iris from drifting into its default austere territory and keeping the composition bright, almost edible, before the sandalwood-musk base locks it in.
The evolution
The first minutes belong to fruit. Blackcurrant and grapefruit hit bright and tart, the raspberry sorbet lending a confectionary roundness that softens the citrus edge. Carrot seed threads underneath, dry and slightly herbal, anchoring the sweetness before it floats away. Within 20 minutes the iris announces itself, not as the sharp, orris-root depth of a classic iris composition, but as something softer, almost sugared. Rose slips in beside it, offering a clean floral lift that keeps the heart from collapsing into pure musk. The raspberry recedes slowly, like the aftertaste of something cold dissolving on the tongue. By the two-hour mark the sandalwood and musk have taken over. The iris lingers as a faint powderiness, more memory than statement. The fragrance settles into a close, creamy warmth that lasts through the 4-6 hour window, staying intimate rather than projecting.
Cultural impact
The composition treats iris in a way that surprises those familiar with the note's more traditional expressions. Where classic iris compositions often emphasize suede, lipstick, or austere rootiness, this one sweetens the ingredient into something almost confectionary without losing its essential character. The fruit-forward opening and playful register make it accessible to wearers curious about iris who might find severe orris compositions intimidating. It works as a bridge between gourmand-leaning fragrances and classic floral perfumery, offering a softer entry point into a note that can otherwise feel dense or challenging.
