The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Richard Herpin built Oud composition around a single provocation: what if oud didn't need to earn its audience? The tropical fruits arrive first, sweet and slightly tart, with a boozy warmth from the rum that keeps the opening from reading like a casual daytime scent. Osmanthus adds a floral undertone that's almost apricot-like, grounding the brightness. By the time you register what's happening, the oud is already there, woven into the structure rather than arriving as a reveal. This is oud for someone who wants the depth without the lecture.
The note structure creates an unusual arc for an oud fragrance. Here, the oud is present from the first spray, not loud, but unmistakable. The heart materials amplify its darker qualities: jasmine sambac adds a creamy floral layer that could read soft, but frankincense and rose absolute push back against any tendency toward gentleness. Patchouli in the base is earthy and slightly bitter, which keeps the honey absolute and tonka bean from making the drydown feel like dessert. It's structured so the sweetness never fully wins, and the darkness never fully closes the door.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes belong to the fruits. Passion fruit dominates, sharp and bright, with blackcurrant lending a darker berry quality beneath it. The rum note is warm without being aggressive, less cocktail bar, more amber-lit corner. You can smell the osmanthus here too, a soft floral lift that stops the opening from becoming cloying. Then the hand-off. Oud doesn't arrive so much as assert itself, the structure shifts, the sweetness recedes without disappearing, and what's left is darker, resinous, warm. Jasmine sambac and rose absolute keep the heart from becoming austere, but the incense note from the frankincense adds a smoky quality that defines the middle phase. The base is where this earns its name. Patchouli, honey absolute, tonka bean, these hold. Eight to ten hours on most skin types, with the oud and incense staying closest to the skin through the drydown, the honey-tobacco warmth emerging last and lingering overnight.
Cultural impact
Oud Symphony is an oud fragrance for someone who didn't think they wanted oud. The bright tropical opening lowers the barrier, and by the time the darker structure reveals itself, the wearer's already committed. It's an oud composition that removes the performative intensity found in many options, offering depth without asking anything in return. This is the kind of scent someone chooses when they're not trying to prove anything.
