The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Juniper arrived in 2017, one of Richard Herpin's early works before Precious Liquid formally existed as a brand. The fragrance is built around the idea of juniper itself, not juniper as a supporting note, but juniper as the entire argument. Herpin was composing fragrances the way a composer approaches a score: starting from a specific feeling, building outward only as far as the concept demanded. The feeling here centers on juniper's essential character, the cold, resinous quality that defines the note in perfumery. Violet leaf and sage provide structure around the juniper berries, creating a framework that lets the central note speak clearly without unnecessary elaboration. The result is a focused aromatic work that keeps its focus narrow and its intentions direct.
What makes Juniper distinctive is how its notes interact. The top notes of juniper berries arrive with a sharp, green character, that cold medicinal quality that makes the real thing so recognizable. Cypress wood adds a slightly resinous quality, a subtle sharpness that gives the opening its structure. But the interplay between the herbs and woods creates something more complex than expected: sage and rosemary add a quiet herbal quality that keeps the whole composition from feeling stark. It's not a simple scent, no single-note exercise.
The evolution
The opening makes its presence known immediately. Juniper berries arrive crisp and green, with that clean, almost medicinal quality that sets the real thing apart. There's no gradual buildup, the fragrance opens fully formed, that frozen quality established right away. The juniper reads sharp for the opening period, with a woody backbone from cypress that provides structure. As the fragrance develops, the herbs begin to soften. Sage and rosemary emerge from the initial sharpness, becoming less direct and more rounded. The herbal character shifts from bright to something warmer, more settled. Green notes persist throughout this phase, but the overall impression becomes quieter, more internal. The violet leaf becomes more apparent here, adding a subtle floral presence that threads through the herbal structure.
Cultural impact
Juniper arrived in 2017, a period when many fragrances still trended toward layered complexity and bold projection. Its deliberate structure challenged some conventional approaches, stripping away excess materials to reveal a more architectural minimalism. As a work from Richard Herpin, it established a signature approach for Precious Liquid: materials doing distinct work without unnecessary ornamentation. The violet leaf, juniper berries, and herbal notes work in concert, each element serving a specific purpose.
