The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Man in the Mirror arrived in 2020 from Pocket Scents, a house that has developed an original catalogue focused on composition. The name reads like an invitation to introspection, and the composition follows that thread. There is nothing here that demands the spotlight. Pink pepper and rosemary lead with herbal brightness, while a generous heart of iris root, neroli, and jasmine gives the scent its introspective core. The opening cuts in with a clean, almost sharp clarity, a green snap that catches your attention before the softer elements settle underneath. As the top notes recede, the warmth at the centre begins to emerge, folding the fragrance into something quieter and more contemplative.
The interesting choice here is the iris root, or orris, sitting at the heart rather than the base. Orris carries a powdery, slightly rooty depth that reads as both floral and mineral, and placing it at the centre rather than the foundation shifts the entire weight of the composition. Sitting alongside neroli and ylang-ylang creates a bridge that softens what could otherwise be a sharper aromatic composition. The pink pepper and rosemary up top keep things from veering too sweet, while the patchouli base stops it from becoming a clean-room cologne.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes belong to pink pepper and rosemary, sharp and herbal with a green bite. Petitgrain rides underneath, adding a slightly bitter citrus edge that reads more composed than cheerful. By the 30-minute mark, the florals arrive: neroli opens up with that clean, soapy brightness, while ylang-ylang adds a creamier, almost banana-like sweetness in the background. Orris root powder settles in slowly, giving the heart a soft, suede-like texture that smooths the sharper edges from the opening. The jasmine is there but plays a supporting role, more textural than dominant. After 2 hours, the patchouli surfaces. It is a dry, earthy patchouli, not the damp chocolate-dipped kind. Woody notes fill in behind it, giving the base a slightly sweet, almost sandalwood-adjacent warmth. The iris powder lingers throughout, holding the composition together like starch in fabric.
Cultural impact
Man in the Mirror offers a composition where the iris-driven heart takes centre stage rather than hiding beneath heavier base notes. The restraint built into the formula means the fragrance stays close to the skin, rewarding those who take the time to notice its quieter details. The blend of pink pepper, rosemary, neroli, jasmine, and patchouli creates a layered aromatic profile that evolves gently rather than announcing itself. It wears like a composition built for those who appreciate powdery textures, herbal clarity, and a floral-woody balance that holds together from the opening through the drydown.
