Why it exists.
The beginning
Pierre Guillaume composed Au-Delà du Noir in 2016, drawing on a moment most perfumers would smooth over. The inspiration: the haunting bouquet of an exceptional red wine from the Côte de Nuits, a Burgundy so layered it stayed lodged in memory. Guillaume wanted to bottle that collision of dark fruit and ancient cellar air, then thread it through oud incense heavy enough to carry the weight. Named "beyond black," it gestures at what lurks past the obvious dark notes into territory richer and stranger. The fragrance belongs to his Rhapsodie collection, a grouping built around compositions that lean into emotional resonance rather than conventional structure.
What sets this composition apart is the choice of Kyara oud rather than standard oud. Kyara carries a sweeter, almost honeyed smoke profile, rarer and more complex than the barnyard-leaning ouds common in Western perfumery. Pairing it with blackcurrant bud creates a vinous, catty brightness that lifts the incense rather than letting it sink into darkness. The Davana, an Indian artemisia, adds a boozy fruitiness that echoes the wine inspiration while staying within reach of a wearable composition. Animalic notes ground the whole thing in skin warmth, preventing the oud from floating away into pure abstraction.

The drydown settles into a dense, amber-leaning close: incense softened by spice, with the oud still audible but no longer dominant. Projection is moderate in the first hour, then quietens to an intimate trail by hour four.
