The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Paul Smith has always treated scent the way he treats colour: as something to play with, not preach about. The Sunshine Edition line captured that philosophy in a bottle, and the 2014 women's edition carries it forward as a special release, a collector's variation on the original Sunshine Edition for Women. It's a seasonal limited release with a collector's bottle, the kind of playful, generous creation that never overthinks the moment. Released in 2014, it sits alongside other limited-edition florals from the brand, each one a small, wearable postcard from a season the designer clearly loved.
The composition does something interesting with its fruit opening. Red berries, peach, and grapes together create a lush, almost jam-like sweetness, but the grapes pull it sideways into something less confectionary and more like biting into a cold bunch on a summer afternoon. The berries add a tart sparkle that keeps the opening from feeling heavy, while the peach lends a soft, velvety undertone that rounds out the edges. Then Bulgarian rose steps in, and suddenly the fruit doesn't feel like a dessert course anymore.
The evolution
The opening hits like a fruit bowl left on a sunlit counter. Red berries and peach arrive together, sweet but not cloying, with the grapes adding a green, almost watery lift that keeps things from tipping into candy. That opening phase feels bright and uncomplicated, an uncomplicated burst of summer fruit that catches the light just so. Then the florals slide in, peony first, soft and slightly powdery, followed by jasmine for a green floral edge, and Bulgarian rose anchoring everything with a dewy, old-school femininity. The heart of the fragrance carries this floral conversation forward, each bloom taking a turn in the spotlight. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its place. White musk doesn't just show up, it settles into skin like a second layer, quiet and warm, carrying faint traces of the rose for hours.
Cultural impact
Paul Smith's Sunshine Edition line has always been about accessible charm rather than fragrance-world gravitas, and the 2014 women's edition sits comfortably in that lane. The fragrance wears its warmth lightly, the kind of scent that feels right for sunny afternoons, weekend brunches, or any moment that calls for something easy and pretty. It's playful without being childish, pretty without being precious, and that balance is part of what makes it memorable. The fruity floral character gives it an immediate appeal, while the Bulgarian rose and white musk base keep it from feeling one-dimensional.
