The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Salt of 4 Seas arrived in 2017, the work of Olga Gosina, the perfumer behind OsmoGenes Perfumes, a Russian niche perfumery brand founded in 2016. Gosina built this composition around a single clear idea, something vast and briny that doesn't try to mimic an actual coastline but instead evokes the feeling of salt air meeting dry land. The name points to the concept without spelling it out, and the juice delivers on that promise in a way that feels considered rather than accidental. Citrus opens the door, a bright and slightly sour entry that recalls lemon zest pulled fresh from the rind, and then the composition shifts as resin and balsam step in to take over the room.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the way it builds its salt effect without leaning on the usual suspects. The sea salt sits in the heart alongside elemi resin and freesia, and that pairing does the heavy lifting. Elemi brings a bright, almost peppery clarity that lifts the salt and gives it dimension, while freesia adds a green floral softness that rounds out the sharper edges. Down below, the base of ambergris, guaiac wood, Peru balsam, and styrax pulls the whole thing into warm, smoky territory.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are sharp and almost challenging. Citrus up front, bright and a little sour, the way lemon zest smells before you add sugar. Then the salt arrives, and it doesn't smell like the ocean exactly. Elemi cracks through with a peppery brightness that makes the whole opening feel alive rather than just clean. The freesia comes in underneath, softer than expected, bending the salt into something floral without ever announcing itself. By the thirty-minute mark the citrus has mostly burned off and the composition has settled into something warmer and stranger. Peru balsam and styrax take over, both of them resinous and a little smoky, a little sweet. The guaiac wood underneath adds a dry, slightly bitter edge, the kind of warm wood that smells like it's been sitting in sunlight.
Cultural impact
Salt of 4 Seas arrived in 2017 from OsmoGenes Perfumes, a young Russian house founded only one year earlier by Olga Gosina. The composition's marine-resin character made it a notable entry in its release year, offering something restrained and mineral where many contemporaries leaned heavier and more opulent. The fragrance built a following among niche perfume enthusiasts who gravitate toward compositions that prioritize atmosphere and wearability over projection and sweetness.
