The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sophie Labbé composed My Destiny for Oriflame in 2016, building it from the kind of ingredients that feel familiar the moment they land: grapefruit, blueberry, vanilla. The intent reads clear from the first spritz. This is approachable comfort, not editorial provocation. The composition opens with a bright, juicy burst of grapefruit that carries a slight pithy bitterness, the kind of citrus snap that wakes up the senses without shouting for attention. Almost immediately, the blueberry note folds in, lending a soft, jammy sweetness that softens the grapefruit's sharper edges. There's a candied quality to the berry, somewhere between fresh fruit and the kind of compote you'd spoon over yogurt.
What's quietly clever about My Destiny is the inversion of its opening. Lotus and grapefruit suggest water and citrus, but the blueberry underneath is denser, almost jammy. That fruit does the heavy structural work, grounding what would otherwise be a fleeting top into something with ribs. The heart then leans fully floral with peony and orange blossom, powdery rather than indolic, so it never tips into headiness. The vanilla-patchouli-heliotrope base is the oldest move in the playbook, but heliotrope adds a marzipan softness that keeps the patchouli from reading too dark. It is a chypre skeleton dressed in soft jersey.
The evolution
The first ten minutes belong to grapefruit and blueberry, bright and slightly tart, the way fruit tastes colder than it is. Lotus pulls the opening sideways into something almost aquatic, which fades faster than you'd expect. Around the twenty-minute mark the peony and orange blossom arrive together, powdery and soft-edged, and the fruit underneath shifts from fresh to cooked, more jam than berry. Apricot bridges that handoff without calling attention to itself. By the second hour the vanilla has settled fully, warm and round, with patchouli giving it a low hum underneath, earthy but not dirty. Heliotrope's almond-milk sweetness holds the last three to four hours, close to the skin, almost edible. What survives into the next morning on fabric is vanilla and a faint trace of patchouli, like the ghost of the day before.
Cultural impact
My Destiny sits comfortably in Oriflame's broader feminine portfolio, which spans everything from Love Potion to Amber Elixir Mystery, a range of fragrances with varied character and personality. It's the kind of composition that lives in a bathroom cabinet rather than on a collector's shelf, and that accessibility is the point. The opening grapefruit and blueberry combination gives it a youthful, almost playful energy, like something you'd reach for on a Saturday morning without overthinking it. The vanilla drydown keeps it grounded, adding a layer of softness that keeps the fruity top from feeling too sharp or too fleeting.
