The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
XO Emerald is part of Orientica's XO Xclusif Oud collection, released in 2022 as a bridge between two perfumery worlds. The brief was simple: take the green, aromatic freshness of a Mediterranean scent and anchor it to something deeper. Oakmoss. Sandalwood. Amber. Materials that speak to Arabian perfumery without dragging the composition backward into tradition for tradition's sake. The name, Emerald, says everything about the green-forward intent, but the drydown is where the fragrance quietly surprises.
The galbanum-mint pairing is the structural gamble. Galbanum gives an almost vegetable bitterness at the top, and mint adds its own kind of cool. Used carelessly, that combination can feel clinical. Here, jasmine and bay leaf step in as the bridge, floral and herbal without being sweet or medicinal. It's an unusual triage. Most fragrances let their top notes dissipate before revealing complexity. XO Emerald builds the complexity immediately, then spends the rest of the wear revealing warmth instead. The oakmoss isn't there for nostalgia. It's there to ground the mint, to keep it from feeling like toothpaste. And it works.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp and green. Galbanum and ginger arrive together, mandarin blossom softening the citrus without diluting it. Bergamot has the most staying power among the top notes, so the first minutes read as bright and zingy, not synthetic, not loud. Around the 10-minute mark, mint announces itself and doesn't leave. That mint persists through the heart and drydown, which is unusual. Most fragrances let mint fade as the base develops. Here it lingers as a cool thread through jasmine and bay leaf, keeping the heart from going fully floral. By the second hour, jasmine recedes and the base takes over, oakmoss and sandalwood, with amber and musk holding close to the skin. The sillage drops to intimate by hour three, but the longevity doesn't suffer. Expect 8-10 hours on most skin types. On fabric, it lasts until the next morning, the sandalwood residue warm and quiet, a whisper rather than a statement.
Cultural impact
XO Emerald sits in a specific lane: green-fresh compositions with enough Arabian warmth to distinguish them from European competitors. The mint-oakmoss combination is uncommon enough to draw attention in niche circles while remaining approachable enough for daily wear. Community reviews praise the value, strong longevity and moderate sillage at a price point well below comparable niche fragrances. It's the kind of fragrance that makes people feel they've found something others haven't noticed yet. The 2022 release timing placed it in a market that was beginning to value exactly this kind of bridge between Western freshness and Eastern depth.
