Oud Wood arrived in 2018 as part of Orientica Perfumes' release schedule, taking the raw materials that define Arabian perfumery and building something grounded in wood and spice rather than sweetness. The brief, as best you can read it from the composition itself, was to let the heavier notes speak without leaning on gourmand shortcuts. The structure rests on three pillars: a cumin-led opening that earns its warmth honestly, a cedar-sandalwood heart that keeps the smoke from becoming theatrical, and a tobacco-patchouli base that does the heavy lifting without announcing itself. What's immediately clear from the formula is an unusual commitment to restraint.
What's unusual here is the restraint. Most woody compositions in the Arabian tradition lean on oud as a featured soloist, but Oud Wood keeps its oud in a supporting role and lets the wood-tobacco axis do the structural work. The cumin runs through the entire composition, showing up sharp and savory at the opening, threading quietly through the smoky heart, and lingering as a warm-spicy hum beneath the tobacco in the later stages. That continuity gives the whole fragrance a feeling of being seasoned rather than constructed, as if the notes arrived together rather than being layered.
The evolution
The opening is all movement. Cumin hits first, sharp and savory, while bergamot and lemon try to lighten it. They don't succeed, and that's the point. The citrus folds backward relatively quickly, and cedar arrives, dry and almost pencil-shaving in its crispness. Sandalwood follows, creamy but not sweet, and the leather note surfaces like something pulled from an old jacket lining. The heart phase reads as a smoke-tinged wood room with tobacco leaf drying in the corner, a space that feels lived-in rather than composed. As the composition moves into its later stages, the tobacco steps forward into the patchouli, which here is earthy rather than dirty, and the woodiness consolidates into a single warm tone.
