The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hernan Fígoli composed 214 Musk & Cedro for O Boticário in 2019. The fragrance opens with a bright, spice-forward arrangement built on cardamom and black pepper, with cedar and leather providing the structural backbone underneath. Cardamom brings an almost aromatic lift at the top, green and slightly herbal, while black pepper contributes a dry warmth that reads as heat rather than sweetness. The whole composition leans into wood and spice from the first spray, positioning itself as a warm, un-gourmand fragrance within a Brazilian context. Cedar carries much of the middle movement, dry and clean, and leather anchors the base with a smooth, animalic softness that rounds out the sharper top notes.
Black pepper appears in both the top and heart of the pyramid, showing up twice in the composition's official structure. Belambra tree (Phytolacca dioica) sits in the base as a South American hardwood, lending the drydown a regional botanical weight. Georgywood, a synthetic woody molecule, also appears in the base alongside natural cedar and leather, where its clean diffusion complements the naturals. The interplay between Georgywood and the cedar gives the base a smooth, modern finish that holds together as the spice recedes.
The evolution
The first hour is bright and assertive. Cardamom leads the charge, backed by Sicilian bergamot and black pepper that read almost peppery-spicy rather than citrusy. There's an immediacy here that sets the tone quickly, and the composition settles within the first thirty minutes as bergamot fades and the spice takes over. By the two-hour mark, cedar and Laotian cinnamon warm the composition into something closer to a spiced wood panel than a sweet perfume. The cinnamon here is dry rather than sugary, lending the drydown a quietly aromatic character. From hour three onward, the leather emerges, soft and suede-like rather than aggressive. The Belambra tree and woody synthetics ground everything, pulling the scent closer to skin. By hour five or six, the drydown is a quiet cedar-leather blend, intimate and close, with just a trace of the pepper that opened the whole thing.
Cultural impact
Within O Boticário's broader catalogue, 214 Musk & Cedro stands as the woody, musk-driven entry in a lineup that includes well-known names like Malbec and Egeo. It offers a cedar-and-leather profile for wearers drawn to warmer, woodier territory. The fragrance shares shelf space with some of the brand's louder, sweeter compositions, providing a quieter counterpoint for those who gravitate toward musks, cedar, and skin-forward warmth. Its positioning within the line speaks to wearers who prefer grounded, spiced woods over heavier sweetness.
