The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Pretty Fairy arrived in 2006 from Novae Plus. The bottle tells the story before the juice does: a painted figure of a flying Dunhuang fairy, drawn from the Mogao Caves, where Gandhara, the Indian god of music and fragrance, sends scent across the air. The fairy sings surrounded by flowers. Her scarf streams behind her. The illustration was meant to carry a joyful message about passion for beauty and truth. The fragrance was built to match that lightness: blackcurrant and melon at the top, raspberry, rose, and lily of the valley at the heart, cedar and musk underneath. Released as a 50 ml EDP, the juice opens with a bright burst of fruit that feels almost fizzy, the blackcurrant lending a tart, candy-like snap while the melon softens the edges into something rounder and more playful.
What's interesting here is the collision between the bottle's art-historical gravity and the juice's unapologetic sweetness. The Mogao Caves reference draws on centuries of visual tradition, and the composition leans fully into the early-2000s fruity-floral sensibility. That tension gives Pretty Fairy its specific flavor: it's not trying to be a museum piece, but it's not ashamed of looking at one either.
The evolution
Pretty Fairy opens with the playful sparkle of blackcurrant, bright and mischievous, before settling into the juicy sweetness of melon. The airy fruit duo gives the whole scent a carefree, youthful energy that feels like a summer afternoon drifting into a warm evening. The blackcurrant brings a tart, almost candied brightness that prickles at first spray, while the melon smooths it into a softer, more rounded sweetness that sits comfortably on the skin. As the opening fades, the fruit gradually gives way to the floral heart: raspberry adds a jammy richness, rose lends a soft, powdery warmth, and lily of the valley introduces a cool, green shimmer that keeps the bouquet feeling fresh rather than syrupy. It is light enough for daily wear yet memorable enough to leave a soft trail behind.
Cultural impact
Pretty Fairy sits in a quiet category: the fruity-floral that was meant to be worn rather than analyzed. It occupies territory alongside many similar compositions built around blackcurrant and musk, the kind of scent designed for everyday use rather than display. Wearers who reach for it tend to want uncomplicated sweetness without the weight of a more complex composition. The fragrance doesn't demand attention, but it rewards a closer look. On skin, the opening fruit notes feel almost like a burst of cold juice, sweet and immediate. As the hours pass, the florals emerge with a gentle softness, never overpowering.
