The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Egoism takes its name literally. It's a fragrance about the self, Narcissus, the flower named for the figure who looked inward and found everything he needed. Mariya Chaykovskaya built this composition around that premise: a scent that asserts without apology, that exists on its own terms. The launch came from her laboratory, part of a body of work that showed a perfumer willing to explore compositions the mainstream tends to avoid. Narcissus is not a crowd-pleaser. It's a statement.
What makes Egoism unusual is the structure itself. Most fragrances build from bright opening notes down to a base. Egoism launches directly into the heart, French Narcissus and Yellow Narcissus arrive immediately, no preamble. The Narcissus accord carries both cool green facets and a honeyed sweetness that reads almost indolic at its peak. Wild Jasmine anchors the base, warming what could have been too austere. The combination creates a floral that feels complete rather than linear, self-contained from first spray to final fade.
The evolution
The first spray is Narcissus. The fragrance presents its core immediately, settling into the green-floral heart without delay. Yellow Narcissus adds a yellow warmth that lifts the cooler facets, creating a dynamic tension that holds for the first hour. As it settles, the Jasmine begins to emerge, rounding the edges and adding sweetness that the Narcissus alone doesn't carry. By the second hour, the drydown is warmer, deeper, jasmine-warmed skin rather than green meadow. The longevity holds its structure for most of a workday before fading into something quiet and close.
Cultural impact
Narcissus-centric fragrances are rare in any market, niche or mainstream. Most floral compositions reach for flowers the industry has built consumer expectations around. Egoism sidesteps that entirely. The green, slightly austere character of Narcissus positions it outside typical white-floral territory, appealing to wearers who want floral as statement rather than backdrop.
