The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Dibaj is Nabeel's 2025 entry in the Luxus collection, and the name does the work of a thesis statement. The fragrance takes silk as its subject not in a literal sense but in everything silk implies: weight, drape, the way light bends across its surface, the temperature it holds against skin. There is something about the way Dibaj wears that captures that exact sensation, a texture you can almost feel through the nose alone. The composition moves like fabric in motion, catching warmth at the pulse points and holding it without radiating outward too aggressively. On skin, the opening reads soft and enveloping rather than sharp or projecting, the kind of sillage that trails behind you rather than announcing your arrival.
What makes Dibaj structurally interesting is the decision to build around hazelnut rather than oud, frankincense, or rose as the gravitational center. The pear and osmanthus in the upper layers do something unexpected with the opening, lending a translucent sweetness that feels airy rather than resinous. Saffron and jasmine in the heart keep the composition tethered to a familiar regional vocabulary without letting it tip into the dense, almost edible territory that many Arabic compositions occupy.
The evolution
The opening belongs to hazelnut and pear, a soft golden sweetness that reads almost like roasted nut dusted over fruit. Olibanum hums underneath, barely a whisper, more suggestion than statement. The texture of the opening is light and slightly powdery, the pear lending a clean sweetness that keeps the hazelnut from going heavy too quickly. As the composition develops, the pear dissolves into something juicier while saffron arrives with its leathery, almost peppery heat. Rose and jasmine braid together, but the rose leads, slightly candied, slightly metallic, keeping the saffron from going gourmand. Osmanthus adds a creamy apricot undertone that rounds the heart without softening it too far. The florals carry a waxy, almost buttery quality that presses against the nuttiness rather than sitting on top of it, creating a density that builds rather than fades.
Cultural impact
Dibaj positions itself with a distinct restraint, a quieter alternative within a regional fragrance conversation that often prizes projection and density. The hazelnut lead at its center is unusual for the category, built around a gourmand note rather than the resins and woods that dominate much of the regional output. This choice gives Dibaj a profile that reads warm and intimate rather than bold and far-reaching, drawing people in rather than pushing scent outward.
