The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Artem arrived in 2022 as part of Memoize London's Colour Range, a collection that treats each release like a different shade on a palette. Each fragrance in the line carries its own story prompt, a short piece of text designed to give the scent a narrative starting point and invite the wearer into a particular frame of mind. Artem's prompt reads: "The defining moment you realised you're different from the rest." The scent translates that feeling into powder and petal, a composition designed less to impress a room and more to settle into the wearer like a thought they keep returning to. On skin, it opens with a soft iris dust, dry and cool, almost like the chalky residue left by a violet candy.
What makes Artem unusual is the restraint on both sides of the pyramid. Violet and tea open cool and slightly bitter, the kind of combination that suggests a face mist rather than a fragrance. Then orris root and tonka bean arrive, the orris bringing that rooty, suede-like iris character, the tonka smoothing the edges without tipping into gourmand territory. The base is where the surprise lives: strawberry, but only the idea of strawberry. No jammy sweetness. Just a whisper of fruit buried under musk and vanilla, like jam on toast remembered rather than eaten. It's a fruity floral that refuses to behave like one.
The evolution
Artem opens with a powdery hush, the violet and tea notes arriving together like ink dropped into warm water, slow and deliberate. As the composition settles, the orris root and tonka bean step forward, lending a creamy weight that softens the violet's sharper edges into something milky and quiet. In the final hours, the strawberry and vanilla weave through the musk, leaving a skin-close warmth that reads more intimate than decorative, a scent that prefers closeness over projection and asks the wearer to lean in rather than step back.
Cultural impact
Artem reads as a composition interested in closeness rather than spectacle. Its powdery restraint, the dry iris that dominates the opening and threads throughout the wear, suggests a fragrance designed to live on the skin rather than fill a room. The strawberry-vanilla base brings a sweetness that softens the iris's more austere edges, lending the scent a warmth that keeps it from feeling cool or distant. On the opening, the strawberry reads almost candied, slightly tart, layered against the iris's violet-like powder. Within the first thirty minutes, the vanilla begins to surface, wrapping the fruit in a creamier texture.
