The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Solis arrived in 2022 as part of Memoize London's Colour Range collection, a group of fragrances built around elemental concepts. Where other houses might reach for geography or mythology, Memoize turned inward: Solis means sun in Latin. An ode to the youthful self, to the glow that doesn't fade as the years accumulate. Solis anchors the idea of warmth retained, the light you carried at twenty, still burning at forty. The fragrance opens with bright citrus, bergamot and juniper, a sparkling introduction that feels both fresh and inviting. As the scent develops, deeper notes emerge, warm and enveloping, revealing the complexity that makes Solis feel timeless rather than fleeting.
What makes Solis structurally interesting is the tension between brightness and depth. The opening announces itself with bergamot and juniper, citrusy, almost sharp, then introduces bourbon whiskey as the unexpected guest. Here, the whiskey opens bright and fizzing, a top-note concession to warmth rather than a statement. The heart, Moroccan rose and orris root, is where the fragrance finds its footing. Orris root carries a powdery violet quality that makes the rose feel vintage rather than florist-bought. Cardamom bridges the gap between that floral warmth and the woody base that follows.
The evolution
The opening is bergamot first, then juniper, a clean, bright citrus that doesn't announce itself loudly. The bourbon whiskey arrives quickly, lending a warmth that reads almost like a sparkle. This phase lasts perhaps twenty minutes before the citrus recedes and the rose emerges, pillowed by orris root's powdery violet quality. The transition is smooth, no cliff edges. By the second hour, the cardamom becomes more apparent, threading through the rose like spice through honey. The drydown is where Solis earns its name. Amber dominates, golden and warm, supported by sandalwood's cream and patchouli's earth. The oud surfaces last, not the aggressive, barnyard oud of some Middle Eastern compositions, but a softer woodiness that adds weight without drama. Sillage is moderate throughout; you'll know you're wearing it, but the room won't.
Cultural impact
Within Memoize London's catalogue, Solis occupies a specific position among the warm, wearable fragrances. The oriental-woody structure makes it a distinctive release, one that offers both accessibility and complexity. The fragrance opens with an unexpected brightness from the bourbon whiskey note, a choice that sets it apart from more conventional warm scent profiles. As it develops, the Moroccan rose and orris root create a floral heart that feels both classic and contemporary. The drydown anchors the experience with amber and sandalwood, leaving a lingering warmth that invites return.
