The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2009, forty years after Apollo 11, Clara Molloy conceived Moon Safari as an imaginary journey, a safari on the Moon. The Moon landing anniversary gave the project its title. Perfumer Alienor Massenet built the composition around luminous citrus, grapefruit, bitter orange, mandarin, tuned to vetiver, neroli, and sage. The opening sparkles with an almost atmospheric brilliance, each citrus note contributing to a radiant whole rather than standing alone. Grapefruit provides a sharp, tart opening that commands attention immediately. Bitter orange follows with its bittersweet complexity, while mandarin adds a softer, rounder quality that prevents the blend from becoming too austere.
The pyramid structure is the notable thing here. Moon Safari stacks four citrus materials in the top tier, grapefruit, bitter orange, Amalfi lemon, mandarin orange, creating a burst that reads as atmosphere rather than individual notes. Then the heart introduces lemon verbena alongside neroli, sage, and vetiver. That repetition is not a mistake. The verbena bridges the opening and the heart, creating continuity where most fragrances make a sharper transition. Vetiver anchors the middle with its characteristic smoky-vegetal chord, preventing the composition from drifting into pure sweetness.
The evolution
The opening is bright and immediate, grapefruit leading, bitter orange following, mandarin adding a rounder sweetness underneath. As the initial burst settles, the herbs begin to assert themselves. Neroli appears quietly, softening the citrus edges. Sage and vetiver arrive together, shifting the character from fresh to aromatic. The citrus does not disappear, it recedes, becoming a background warmth rather than the main event. The leather note in the base is soft, not aggressive. It is the smell of a leather jacket worn often, not a new bag. Tonka bean extends the drydown, adding a sweetness that rounds the edges of the leather. The combination creates a smooth, enveloping finish that feels both sophisticated and approachable, with the leather and tonka working in tandem to create a lingering signature on the skin.
Cultural impact
Launched in 2009 to mark the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, Moon Safari captures the imagination of space exploration. The perfume is an imaginary safari on the lunar surface, a voyage that never happened but felt inevitable. This concept resonates with the romantic idea of pushing beyond known boundaries, translating abstract aspiration into something tangible that you can wear close to your skin. The fragrance invites you to imagine what might have been felt on that first moonwalk, translated into scent rather than sight or sound.
