The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Masque Milano, founded in Italy in 2012, has consistently crafted niche fragrances that read like narrative chapters rather than simple scent compositions. The house draws heavily from global olfactory traditions, and Mandala Oud emerged from their ongoing fascination with Indian incense rituals. Perfumer Christian Carbonnel, known as Chris Maurice, translated the meditative practice of burning incense-laden mandalas into a wearable form. The piece launched in 2023 as a spiritual bridge between ancient ceremony and contemporary perfumery, using frankincense and aldehydes to capture the initial smoke of sacred fires and oud to represent the deep, contemplative stillness that follows.
The note structure of Mandala Oud reflects a deliberate philosophy of balance. Frankincense and aldehydes provide an accessible entry point, preventing the oud from overwhelming at first contact. The heart notes of myrrh and sandalwood create a warm, spiced middle ground that feels inviting rather than aggressive. The base of oud and ambergris anchors the composition in depth and longevity, while musk ensures the final impression remains smooth and skin-conversant. This layering reflects the ritual of the mandala itself, moving from external brightness to internal stillness, with each phase building toward a contemplative center.
The evolution
The journey of Mandala Oud begins with a luminous, almost ceremonial opening where frankincense and aldehydes create an immediate sense of ritual space. Cardamom and angelica add layers of spice and herbal freshness, suggesting the moment incense first meets flame. The heart deepens this narrative, introducing myrrh, cinnamon, and clove that evoke the warm, spiced air of temple interiors. Sandalwood grounds this phase with creamy woodiness while nutmeg adds subtle complexity. The fragrance reaches its meditative conclusion with oud, ambergris, and musk, where the smoky animalic depth of oud meets the marine sweetness of ambergris, creating a drydown that feels both ancient and intimately personal.
Cultural impact
Since its 2023 debut, Mandala Oud has sparked conversation among niche collectors for its daring blend of aldehydic brightness and dual‑oud depth. Wearers often cite its bold projection as a statement piece, making it a go‑to choice for evenings where a memorable scent is desired, and it continues to be referenced in forums as a benchmark for modern oud compositions.
