The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
La Voyance arrived in 2021 from Montreal-based natural perfumery Lvnea. Perfumer April Engloner, who builds her compositions almost entirely from botanical extracts, composed this one as an invocation of the deep conifer forest, not the cheerful Christmas-tree kind, but the older, shadowed growth where the trees crowd together in resinous quiet. The name hints at what the scent is meant to do. La Voyance is a vision, something seen through the trees rather than a landscape walked through. Engloner's fragrances are inspired by natural history, folklore, and magic, and this one reads as a ritual conducted in the woods at the edge of dusk. There's no sweetness here, no crowd-pleasing citrus to soften the arrival. The smoke is already lit when you find the clearing.
What makes this composition unusual is its refusal to soften. La Voyance skips any smoothing step entirely, dropping the wearer directly into resin and smoke. The pinyon and Virginia cedar do the structural work, with juniper berry and juniper leaf adding green bitterness in two registers, while lavender absolute and rosemary absolute push the herbal quality into something more apothecary than decorative. Labdanum and fir balsam anchor the base, giving the smoke something sticky and dark to cling to.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are cold and sharp. Pinyon pine and juniper hit the skin with a green, almost mentholated clarity, and the smoke is there from the start, not as an afterthought but as a co-conspirator, the smell of a fire lit hours ago in a cabin you haven't reached yet. The lavender absolute weaves through the conifer like a silver thread, herbal and slightly medicinal, carrying a rough, almost astringent quality that feels grown rather than blended. After the first hour, the Virginia cedar begins to surface. The sharpness softens. The rosemary absolute pushes warmer, greener, almost piney in a different direction. Fir balsam arrives with its sweet-tart resin quality, and the composition starts to feel less like standing in a forest and more like wearing something cut from one.
Cultural impact
La Voyance reads as a genuine conifer experience, grounded rather than synthetic-smelling, with the kind of herbal lavender that feels grown rather than composed. It suits wearers who want their pine fragrances to read as serious botanical work, built from identifiable materials rather than abstract suggestions of green. The all-botanical construction sets it apart from many compositions in the broader fragrance landscape, and wearers seeking something outside the usual seasonal rotation will find it rewarding.
