The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The sheep wanted to smell like grass. That was the brief, more or less, when Lush's in-house perfumers sat down to create Mossy Bottom, a limited-edition body spray born from the Shaun The Sheep x Lush collaboration. The brief was simple. The execution was not. Translating the literal smell of fresh-cut grass into something wearable, something you'd actually want to spray on yourself, required finesse. Lush's perfumers have spent decades mastering this kind of olfactory translation, taking real smells from the world and distilling them into something that exists on skin. Mossy Bottom is their answer to a deceptively simple question: what does a sheep smell like when it's rolling in fresh meadow grass?
The answer lies in the green accord, that central grassy note that defines the opening and refuses to let go entirely, even as the drydown takes over. It's not a single ingredient. It's a composition within the composition, built to evoke the smell of grass stems crushed underfoot on a warm afternoon. What makes Mossy Bottom interesting is the way that green accord sits alongside bergamot from Calabria, cold-pressed, bright, with a mineral undertone that keeps the grass from going flat. The neroli adds a clean floral dimension that most grass-inspired fragrances skip entirely. And the sandalwood grounds everything in warmth before it disappears.
The evolution
The green accord arrives first, immediate, bright, almost confrontational in its freshness. Think of the moment you step onto a just-mowed lawn in summer. That smell hits you in waves. For the first thirty minutes, the fragrance holds there, stubborn and vivid. Then the hand-off begins. Neroli's clean floral quality edges in, followed by sandalwood's warm creaminess. The composition shifts from raw green to something more aromatic, more complex, a meadow in full sun rather than just-cut. In the drydown, the green accord gradually releases its grip. The sandalwood takes over, settling into a soft, powdery-woody embrace that stays close to the skin. On fabric, the scent lingers longer, that fresh-cut grass memory holds in the air for hours before fading to a quiet, earthy presence.
Cultural impact
Mossy Bottom is a limited-edition body spray from the Shaun The Sheep x Lush collaboration, released in 2025. The Lush community has responded with strong opinions, some describe it as the most accurate fresh-cut grass scent they've encountered, with longevity that outlasts expectations for a body spray. Others find the green accord too literal, reading closer to lawnmower bag than fine fragrance. That polarizing quality is built into the concept. The sheep wanted to smell like grass. The perfumers delivered exactly that.
