The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Emma Vincent (née Dick) created Avocado Co-Wash, drawing on the sherbet-sharp tartness of litsea cubeba and bergamot to build something that cuts clean and bright. The name references the avocado, unexpectedly transformed into something zingy and alive. Originally conceived as a body spray, it carries more intention than that category usually suggests, with a warm olibanum core that stops it from being just another fresh-citrus throwaway. This fragrance shows a way of finding complexity in unexpected places, treating everyday products with the same intentional care as fine perfume.
What makes Avocado Co-Wash unusual is how the citrus refuses to behave. Litsea cubeba brings a tart, almost tropical edge that most bergamot-only compositions miss, the sharpness is deliberate, almost acidic, cutting through the expected fresh-citrus territory. The frankincense (olibanum) isn't hiding in the base here. It arrives early, warm and resinous, threading through the bright opening and preventing the scent from ever feeling lightweight. It's an oriental move dressed in citrus clothing, and that tension is exactly where this fragrance lives.
The evolution
The opening hits sharp and tart, bergamot and litsea cubeba arriving together in a burst of sherbet-like brightness. The citrus does not soften much in the first phase as olibanum begins pulling it downward into something warmer. The transition is gradual as bergamot gradually gives way to deeper resonance. Frankincense takes over the direction while the bergamot lingers as a soft undercurrent. Incense notes develop a subtle smoky thread during this phase. By the drydown, the citrus has receded, with only a memory of brightness remaining against warm, resinous skin. The frankincense stays close, intimate, lasting well past what most citrus fragrances manage. The longevity and presence make this a dependable everyday wear for those seeking something beyond typical citrus compositions.
Cultural impact
Avocado Co-Wash has developed a loyal following among Lush enthusiasts who appreciate its unusual citrus structure, tart and almost acidic at first, then settling into something warmer and more resinous. The sherbet-sharp opening captures attention with its bright, energetic character that sets it apart from typical fresh-citrus fragrances. Its longevity is unusually strong for a citrus-forward fragrance, which contributes to its reputation as a dependable everyday wear. There is no precise equivalent in Lush's lineup, drawing those seeking something distinctive in the citrus category.
