The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name means night incense, but Incenso Notturno doesn't start nocturnal. Lorenzo Pazzaglia built his reputation on fruity, joyful compositions, the kind that make people smile. This time, he stepped somewhere darker. The collaboration with House of Merlo, a Polish-Italian partnership with a documented fascination for mysticism and the mysterious, gave him the occasion. Together, they wanted to create something enigmatic. A scent that feels like a ritual already in progress.
What makes this composition unusual is the contrast Lorenzo refused to abandon. Even in darker territory, his sunny side peeks through. The elemi resin is the bridge, resinous and slightly balsamic, but threaded with a luminous quality that keeps the opening from feeling heavy. The oud doesn't arrive gently. It thickens quickly, but the pepper trio (white, black, and nutmeg) ensures the heart never becomes linear. Every phase has a different texture.
The evolution
The opening is a contradiction that works. Bergamot and lemon peel hit bright, almost summery, while elemi resin smolders underneath like embers someone forgot to extinguish. This phase lasts about 30 minutes before the citrus recedes and the darkness settles in. The heart escalates fast. Oud takes over, dense and resinous, while Damask rose appears briefly, not to soften, but to add a sharp, almost medicinal floral note against the spice of black pepper, nutmeg, and cinnamon. The darkness here is all-encompassing. Then the drydown arrives quietly. Incense and ambergris form the foundation, with sandalwood and vanilla adding warmth that lingers close to the skin. Cedar and musk finish the composition. On most skin types, the full arc spans 6-8 hours. The next morning, a faint trace of sandalwood and incense often remains on fabric.
Cultural impact
Incenso Notturno represents Lorenzo Pazzaglia's deliberate departure from the fruity, gourmand-forward compositions that built his reputation. The House of Merlo collaboration brought a Polish-Italian creative partnership together, two entities drawn to mysticism and the enigmatic. The result sits in a specific niche: not a pure smoke scent, but incense-forward enough to satisfy that craving, grounded by a citrus-elemi opening that keeps it approachable. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves.
