The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Liaison de Parfum emerged from New York City in 2012, built on collaboration rather than a single creative vision. The label conceived its first four scents including No Matter What in Vienna before producing them in French laboratories, bringing European sensibility to American independent perfumery. The brand's founding idea was that fragrance could translate the unspoken, that scent operates in a register words cannot reach. No Matter What was designed to embody that belief, a fragrance meant to communicate something direct and uncompromising.
The note selection for No Matter What reflects a specific philosophy about balance and contrast. Coriander and bergamot were chosen to create an opening that resists passivity, a beginning that refuses to be ignored. The rose and jasmine heart represents a more traditional floral character, but the addition of peach prevents this section from feeling predictable. The peach note adds dimension without sweetness overload, a careful calibration that keeps the heart grounded. Patchouli and vetiver in the drydown provide the earthy counterweight that the florals need, anchoring the composition and preventing it from floating away.
The evolution
The opening of No Matter What grabs attention through coriander and bergamot, an aromatic-citrus combination that establishes immediate presence. Coriander brings its characteristic green-pepper quality while bergamot provides sparkling top notes that prevent sharpness from becoming harsh. As the fragrance evolves, rose and jasmine dominate the heart phase, their petals unfurling in a floral arrangement that feels both timeless and contemporary. Peach threads through this stage, adding a whisper of fruit that keeps the florals from becoming austere. The progression from top to heart feels natural, the brightness of the opening gradually giving way to something softer and more intimate. The drydown completes this arc with patchouli, vetiver, and musk, an earthy-woody base that grounds the florals and ensures the scent leaves a lasting impression on skin. This three-part structure rewards observation, revealing new details as hours pass.
Cultural impact
"No Matter What" sits in a quiet corner of niche perfumery, neither a blockbuster nor a collector's unicorn. It arrived during the early 2010s niche boom when independent houses were finally getting shelf space alongside heritage brands. Wearers who find it tend to keep it, describing it as underrated and under-the-radar. It's the kind of fragrance people ask about when you're close enough to smell it, not because it's loud, but because it smells like you made an interesting choice.
