The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Les Soeurs de Noe was founded in Paris in 2019 with a clear philosophy: every fragrance should begin as a memory, something personal and specific enough to carry emotional weight. For Citrus Poetry, that memory was the first morning light after a long trip, the kind where exhaustion and anticipation collide and something electric happens in between. The house, which had built its early reputation on gourmand compositions, was expanding its creative range, and perfumer Jérôme Epinette was brought in to translate this particular feeling into scent. The challenge was to capture that moment of exhaustion becoming energy, of the ordinary suddenly feeling vivid. Lemon and ginger became the tools for that translation, representing the sharpness of morning light and the slight heat of an overtaxed nervous system.
The note selection for Citrus Poetry reflects a deliberate philosophy about what makes a citrus fragrance memorable. Lemon is the obvious choice for the opening, but the addition of black pepper and ginger transforms a straightforward citrus accord into something that feels slightly spiced and alive. The heart notes, orange and apple, bring a fruitiness that maintains brightness while jasmine adds a floral layer that prevents the composition from feeling purely edible. Moss in the drydown is the key choice that separates this from many light citrus fragrances, as it grounds the bright opening with an earthy, slightly mineral quality that feels more complex and mature.
The evolution
The opening of Citrus Poetry immediately establishes the memory the house wanted to capture. Lemon hits first, clean and bright, but the addition of black pepper and ginger prevents this from feeling like just another citrus fragrance. The pepper adds a warmth that makes the lemon feel present and grounded rather than fleeting. As the composition moves into its heart phase, orange emerges to soften the composition, bringing a sweeter, fruit-forward quality that works in contrast to the initial sharpness. Apple introduces a crispness that keeps the heart from becoming overly sweet, while jasmine adds a subtle floral dimension that rounds the fragrance without shifting its character toward something delicate. The drydown anchors everything with moss, an earthy note that mirrors the slight disorientation of waking in an unfamiliar place, and amber, which brings a warmth that signals the beginning of the calm that eventually follows such a journey.
Cultural impact
Since its 2022 debut, Citrus Poetry has found its audience among wearers who want citrus that carries weight past noon. The combination of bright opening and spiced heart places it in a growing category of compositions that refuse to be one thing. Moderate sillage makes it versatile, appropriate for daytime wear without the usual compromise on presence.
