The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Patchouli Noisette began with a question Antoine Lie kept returning to: could patchouli be something unexpected? The ingredient carries decades of associations, and the 2023 release approached it from a different angle. The solution came from an unexpected direction: Italian hazelnut from Piémont, extracted using ultrasound technology that preserves the nut's delicate praline character. It's a pairing that sounds simple on paper but delivers something genuinely different in the bottle.
The hazelnut isn't a standard extract, it's an ultrasound extraction designed internally by the house, using a 100% green process. The result is a material with praline and roasted dimensions that behaves more like a natural accord than an isolated note. Combined with two distinct patchoulis, Indonesian and Sri Lankan, the composition layers earthy, spicy, and balsamic qualities against that soft nuttiness. It's why the fragrance feels neither purely woody nor purely gourmand, but occupies ground between them.
The evolution
Patchouli Noisette opens with the earthy punch you'd expect, but the hazelnut arrives quickly, its praline softness beginning to thread through the dark patchouli. The transition isn't a clean hand-off; both notes coexist for a while, the rough and the soft in the same space. As the heart develops, the hazelnut deepens into something more roasted, almost bitter in the best way, while the patchoulis settle into a creamier register. The drydown is where the slightly sweeter, more refined patchouli keeps the base from becoming heavy. The final hours are soft, intimate, barely there but impossible to forget once you've smelled them.
Cultural impact
Patchouli Noisette offers something specific: the earthy depth of patchouli refined through considered sourcing. The hazelnut note adds a dimension that sets it apart from more conventional interpretations, making it a fragrance that rewards attention to material quality over simple brand recognition. It's not trying to be everything to everyone.
