Why it exists.
The beginning
Antoine Lie composed Escale En Indonésie for Les Indémodables in 2020, and the name tells you almost everything. It's a stop in Indonesia. A pause in the warmth. The fragrance is built around Sumatran ambergris, one of the rarest materials in perfumery, and every other ingredient exists in conversation with it. Calabrian bergamot opens the composition with a clean, almost tart brightness. Sicilian lemon cuts through with sharper acidity, lifting the top into something that feels closer to cold air than to a typical citrus opening. The petitgrain arrives almost immediately, threading green bitterness through the juice so the citrus never tips into sweetness.
Most citrus-forward fragrances lean on synthetics for their bright top notes and never develop much depth. This one builds the entire structure around the citrus as a lens, then lets the base materials, real ambergris from the Sumatran coast, genuine Australian sandalwood, carry the weight. The jasmine absolute isn't decorative. It's creamy, almost narcotic in its density, bridging the fresh top with the warm, animalic drydown in a way most eau de cologne-style compositions never attempt.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are pure brightness. Calabrian bergamot and Sicilian lemon arrive with that just-pressed quality, sharp and clean but never aggressive, softened almost immediately by the green-floral haze of Moroccan petitgrain. There's no sharpness that bites. Just light. Around the twenty-minute mark the composition shifts. The jasmine absolute swells into the picture, bringing a creamy, almost buttery warmth that you wouldn't expect from something that started this crisp. The petitgrain stays present, holding the green thread, but it's now a backdrop to something rounder. This is the phase where most people decide they like it. By the second hour, the sandalwood has settled into its full register, and the ambergris begins to do its quiet work in the background. Not loud. Not forward. Just a warm, slightly saline, faintly animalic softness that makes everything around it feel more expensive. The citrus is gone by now, but you remember it was there.
