A house, in its own words
The story of Les Indémodables begins long before its official founding, with Rémi Pulvérail spending more than a decade traveling the world in search of exceptional aromatic materials. His work as a globetrotting raw material supplier brought him into direct contact with small-scale producers and farmers across diverse regions, building relationships that would later inform the fragrance house's sourcing philosophy. Before establishing Les Indémodables, Rémi founded L'Atelier Français des Matières, which functions as both a creative atelier and a supplier of natural aromatic materials to other perfume houses. This background gave him and his partner Valérie Pulvérail a unique understanding of the supply chain behind fine fragrance. The couple launched Les Indémodables in 2016 as an independent perfume house with a stated commitment to exclusive raw materials and ethical sourcing practices. Their first releases included Rose de Jamal and Musc Des Sables, establishing the house's focus on unusual material combinations and destination-inspired themes. The brand has since expanded to include multiple interpretations of its signature Vanille Havane composition, releasing Extrait Absolu in 2023, Coeur de Oud in 2024, and Cuir des Abysses in 2025. The house continues to operate from France, with both founders remaining active in the brand's development and event appearances. Les Indémodables operates from the conviction that exceptional perfumes must be built around exceptional raw materials. The house rejects the idea that synthetic chemistry can fully substitute for natural ingredients grown in specific terroirs, instead seeking out plant materials from origins that produce distinctive olfactory characteristics. This approach requires sustained travel, relationship-building with small producers, and patience in waiting for harvests that meet the founders' standards. The brand's name itself suggests a philosophy of resistance against the ephemeral, an insistence on compositions that do not follow seasonal trends or market demands for safe, broadly appealing scents. The founders reportedly believe that true creativity in perfumery requires freedom from commercial constraints, a belief reflected in the house's decision to remain independent rather than seeking acquisition by a larger luxury group. Their ethical and environmental commitments extend beyond marketing language to shape actual sourcing decisions, with the brand selecting ingredients not only for olfactory quality but also for the conditions under which they are produced.
