The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name comes from a French phrase: Aimez-moi comme je suis. A straightforward concept, translated simply as love me as I am. But the execution proved anything but simple. A masculine fragrance that avoids the usual declarative posture, that arrives without announcement and persists without insistence. The solution came from an unlikely pairing: hazelnut and vetiver. Hazelnut carries warmth, a certain fullness that suggests something almost edible without tipping fully into confectionery territory. Vetiver provides the counterweight: mineral, dry, rooted. The Haitian variety, used in elevated concentration, brings a smoky undertone that grounds the composition. Together they create a tension that keeps the fragrance from settling into comfortable predictability.
Hazelnut in perfumery carries a particular risk. Most formulations lean into its sweetness, combining it with vanilla or praline until the note reads like a dessert. The choice here ran counter to that tendency. Vetiver acts as a corrective, its mineral and slightly smoky character cutting through the hazelnut's natural warmth before the two reach their equilibrium. The adjustment isn't immediate. The vetiver takes time to assert itself, gradually tempering the edible quality until a balance emerges.
The evolution
The opening arrives bright, almost sharp, citrus and spice announcing themselves without apology. The brightness doesn't persist. Within minutes the hazelnut appears, unexpected and warm, sliding past the initial impression like a late arrival who knows precisely where to stand. The vetiver grows more present as time passes, not replacing the hazelnut but tempering it. This is where the fragrance reveals its ambition: a gourmand note held in check by something mineral and almost austere. The two materials exist in tension, neither claiming dominance. As the composition progresses, the hazelnut deepens, the vetiver warms, and tonka bean introduces a subtle sweetness that never quite arrives, more suggested than present. Tobacco appears as texture rather than character, the smell of something aged and unhurried rather than a strong tobacco presence.
Cultural impact
Released in 2020, Aimez Moi Comme Je Suis offered itself as a signature fragrance for a man comfortable in his own skin, free from the need to perform. The hazelnut-vetiver combination separates it from the mainstream, creating a fragrance that occupies a particular space: masculine without aggression, confident without declaration. Comparisons to Terre d'Hermès and Fat Electrician surface occasionally, but the Caron reads as warmer, less austere than the former, more grounded than the latter. It sits comfortably alongside those fragrances in a collection while maintaining its own distinct character.
