The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Lalique built its name in 1888 as a French glass and jewelry house under René Lalique, pioneering the art of presenting perfume in crystal bottles that were objects of desire in their own right. By 1945, Marc Lalique, René's son, shifted the house fully toward crystal design, introducing the innovations that would define Lalique's signature aesthetic. Sculpteur d'Epices entered the Lalique Noir Premier collection in 2014, created exclusively for Harrods and named to mark that pivotal year when the house transformed. Dorothée Piot composed the fragrance as a tribute to Lalique's sculptural legacy, treating each note like material to be shaped and carved.
The note structure here reflects a deliberate philosophy: start with brightness and precision, move into warmth and complexity, then settle into something lasting and Intimate. The black pepper and citrus opening is designed to capture attention immediately, while the cinnamon, rose, and jasmine heart provides an emotional middle act. The tonka, patchouli, and labdanum base ensures that what remains on the skin hours later feels like a memory rather than an afterthought, something worn rather than sprayed.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a precise, sculptural clarity: black pepper, bergamot, and orange combine to create an opening that is simultaneously sharp and luminous, like light catching a cut gemstone. As the composition moves forward, the heart reveals itself gradually, cinnamon asserting its warm presence alongside rose and jasmine, which soften the spices without diluting them. The drydown marks the final act of the sculpture, tonka bean smoothing the architecture, patchouli grounding it in earth, and labdanum adding a resinous depth that feels ancient and deliberate.
Cultural impact
Sculpteur d'Epices captures the lively spirit of a bustling market, where the bright spark of bergamot meets the warm bite of black pepper and the sweet zest of orange, creating a scent that evokes sun‑kissed citrus stalls and the subtle heat of spice traders sharing stories at twilight, inviting the wearer to experience a vivid, aromatic tableau that feels both timeless and immediate, while also reflecting a modern appreciation for handcrafted elegance and the cultural dialogue between tradition and contemporary design, making the fragrance a quiet ambassador of heritage and innovation in today’s scented landscape.
