The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Luca Maffei composed 16 Oud as LabSolue's olfactory tribute to agarwood, the raw material valued across the Arab world as liquid gold. Maffei approached it not through spectacle but through restraint, pairing oud with two ancient resins, styrax and benzoin, to let the wood's character do the heavy lifting. The numbered naming convention signals the house's apothecary-inflected vocabulary, where each scent reads as a precise laboratory specimen rather than a fantasy.
The choice to build 16 Oud around resin rather than around competing florals or spices is deliberate. Styrax brings a leathery, almost animalic edge that sharpens oud's natural darkness. Benzoin softens the corners with a vanillic warmth that reads almost edible. Together they form a triangle of sweetness, smoke, and wood, each balancing the other so no single material dominates.
The evolution
On skin, the first ten minutes feel almost ecclesiastical. The resins surface first, styrax arriving with a faintly medicinal sweetness, benzoin underneath giving everything a candied edge. Then the oud takes over, not bright or fruity the way some compositions treat it, but dark, almost tarry, with a smoked-cedar grain. After ninety minutes the sharper top notes burn off and the composition settles into its true register: a warm balsamic haze that clings to clothing and skin well into the next day. The benzoin becomes more prominent in the final hours, leaving a soft amber sweetness on fabric, while the oud quietly anchors everything below.
Cultural impact
16 Oud occupies a distinctive place in the niche fragrance conversation, one that values material honesty over spectacle. It appeals to wearers who want the genuine depth of agarwood rendered with clarity rather than amplified for shock value. Its resin-forward structure reads as contemplative, a composition that invites close attention rather than demands it from across a room. The fragrance has found its audience among collectors and curious noses who appreciate how oud can feel both grounded and quietly expressive, without leaning on the louder conventions sometimes associated with the material.
The House
LabSolueLabSolue is an Italian niche perfume house that blends artisanal craft with modern lab techniques. Based in Milan, the brand offers a curated line of fragrances that draw on natural ingredients and a family tradition of scent making. Each scent arrives in a bottle that references historic apothecary vessels, while the formulas emphasize balance and depth. LabSolue also designs home diffusers that echo the same amber‑glass aesthetic, extending the olfactory experience beyond personal wear.
