The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
LabSolue 315 Palo Santo arrived in 2024, composed by Pierre-Constantin Guéros. The composition gathers four materials into a tight arrangement around its central idea: palo santo. Amyris, frankincense, guaiac wood, and sandalwood surround the central wood, each contributing a distinct facet of the character that palo santo alone cannot carry. Amyris introduces a soft, almost dairy smoothness at the surface, bright enough to catch the light but never sharp. Frankincense threads a cool, resinous tension through the formula, the kind of slightly austere edge that keeps the woods from collapsing into sweetness. Guaiac wood lays down a darker, smoked undertone, adding depth and shadow. Sandalwood arrives last, anchoring everything with its long, dense warmth.
What makes 315 Palo Santo compelling is the way its materials share space rather than competing for it. The incense note is woven through the composition rather than placed on top, so the smoke stays present without ever overwhelming the wood beneath. Palo santo doesn't burst open; it surfaces gradually, the way actual wood releases its scent when warmed. The other woods support that emergence, each one softening the transition into the next. The whole composition reads less like a perfume applied to skin and more like a space you find yourself inside.
The evolution
On skin, the opening minutes feel like incense lit in a closed room. Amyris and frankincense move together at the surface, bright and resinous, the amyris lending a soft creamy roundness while the frankincense adds a cool, slightly bitter edge. The two together create an immediate sense of smoke and warmth, though not the harshness of a blown-out match. It's quieter than that, more like the first curl of smoke from something just lit. Palo santo begins to make its presence felt not long after. It doesn't arrive sharply, and it isn't sweet. It reads as warmth in the way sun-warmed wood carries warmth, present and unforced. The frankincense softens as the palo santo rises, receding from the foreground without disappearing, leaving a haze that the central wood moves through.
Cultural impact
315 Palo Santo occupies a specific position within the current landscape of woody niche compositions. It belongs to a small category of fragrances built entirely around palo santo as a central material, and it approaches the wood with a restraint that's relatively rare in the genre. Most palo santo compositions either lean heavily on the wood's smoky associations or treat it as a supporting player in a broader oriental or incense structure. 315 Palo Santo does neither. It keeps the wood at the center and lets the supporting ingredients serve rather than steer.
