The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Artisan Parfumeur established itself in Paris in 1976 as a house that prizes artisanal craft and nature-inspired compositions. Champ de Baies, launched in 2018, continues this tradition under the direction of perfumer Evelyne Boulanger, working in collaboration with Symrise. The brief was simple yet evocative: imagine a field of ripe berries at peak summer, captured in a bottle. Boulanger approached this by starting with bright, acidic top notes that evoke the sensation of sun-warmed fruit, then building a heart around the berries themselves, and finally grounding the experience with a base that mirrors the earth and stems beneath the plants.
The note philosophy behind Champ de Baies prioritizes clarity and balance. Rather than overwhelming the wearer with an explosion of fruit, the fragrance layers its materials so that each phase has room to breathe. The opening is deliberately tart to mirror the reality of picking berries, where sweetness comes only after the initial sourness. The heart captures the moment of ripeness, and the base acknowledges that berries grow close to the earth. Pairing suggestions follow this logic: light florals like peony or lily of the valley echo the jasmine without competing, while simple skin musks and sheer woods in complementary fragrances reinforce the drydown rather than duplicate it.
The evolution
Champ de Baies evolves like a day in berry country, beginning with the sharp, invigorating air of early morning when fruit still carries the coolness of the night. Bergamot and rhubarb provide that initial spark, pear adding a delicate sweetness that prevents harshness. By midday, the berries ripen fully. Blackberry and raspberry become the protagonists, their scent intensified by the warmth of skin. Jasmine drifts through as a quiet accompaniment, the way wildflowers might border a berry patch. By evening, the composition settles into its quietest, most intimate phase. White musk and cedarwood wrap the wearer in softness, amber adds a faint warmth, and patchouli delivers an earthy undercurrent that grounds the entire experience.
Cultural impact
Champ de Baies quickly became a favorite among fans of fresh fruit compositions, often mentioned alongside the house’s iconic Mûre et Musc for its modern take on berry‑musk pairings. Its approachable brightness makes it a go‑to for casual summer outings, while still earning nods in niche fragrance forums for balancing sweetness with a clean, musky drydown.
