The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Totem collection arrived in 2015 as a statement about togetherness. Three scents named after colors, each representing a different facet of the same shared energy. Christophe Raynaud designed it to feel like the first hour of a good day, bright, energizing, accessible without being forgettable. The brief called for freshness with depth, a citrus composition that didn't simply vanish into itself. The Totem bottle, designed by Japanese studio Nendo, embodies that same spirit, sculptural but unpretentious. It speaks to identity without exclusivity. The yellow iteration holds its own within the trio, bringing an optimistic character that feels both modern and timeless.
The tea note in Totem Yellow sets it apart. It's not green tea exactly, but something more translucent and contemplative. It arrives in the heart alongside hedione, peach, and rose, creating a soft middle that gives the fragrance its distinct character. Without it, you'd have a pleasant citrus EDT. With it, the composition gains an unexpected layer of calm beneath the sparkle. The leather base anchors everything, lending warmth without heaviness, a dry, natural note rather than a bold animalic one.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: pink grapefruit and lemon arrive together, the kind of bright citrus burst that defines the top notes. It's crisp and clean, with that slight bitterness from the grapefruit that prevents it from feeling sweet. The first twenty minutes are the fragrance at its most pronounced, the version most noticeable when someone enters a space. What follows is the more interesting part. The tea emerges gradually, bringing a translucent, almost bitter quality that tempers the citrus rather than replacing it. Hedione adds transparency to the composition, while the peach and rose give the heart a soft, slightly ripe quality that avoids being sweet. As the fragrance moves into its base, the citrus fades and the leather takes over. It's not aggressive leather, more like warm suede, natural and slightly dry.
Cultural impact
Totem Yellow sits comfortably in the casual-citrus category, an everyday fragrance designed to smell good without effort. The moderate sillage means it stays close to the skin, present without overwhelming. The tea-peach combination gives the fragrance a distinctive character that sets it apart from straightforward citrus launches. It's the kind of scent that works equally well for morning meetings or weekend outings, versatile enough to become a reliable go-to. The composition manages to feel both fresh and substantive, a balance many bright citruses attempt but few achieve.
