The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Assam of India is named for the tea-growing region in northeastern India, one of the world's most prolific, known for full-bodied, malty leaves that brewers and sippers have prized for centuries. Jennifer Riley built this fragrance around that terroir. The 2015 release follows a simple three-note structure: French lemon in the top, Indian tea at the heart, Mysore sandalwood anchoring the base. What makes it distinctive is the choice to place actual Indian tea at the center rather than using it as a supporting aromatic. Most tea fragrances lean on green or aquatic interpretations, this one commits to the material itself.
The unusual element here is the combination of Indian tea with woody sandalwood and clean citrus. Placing Indian tea as the heart note, supported by Mysore sandalwood, creates a different kind of tension: the rich depth of the tea and the creamy warmth of the wood push against the bright lemon top in a way that keeps the fragrance from feeling like a standard cologne. The citrus-to-wood arc is the composition's most deliberate move, and the reason it reads as both energizing and meditative.
The evolution
The French lemon arrives clean and energizing, but it reads sweet, not sharp. Citron oil rather than zest. This calms the opening instead of sharpening it, which sets the tone for everything that follows. Within the first hour the Indian tea takes over the heart. This is not a green note dressed as tea. The quality of actual Assam leaves comes through, giving the mid-phase a warmth that borders on Ozonic, like the moisture left on skin after drinking a cup and setting it down. The lemon doesn't disappear. It lingers alongside the tea in a way that keeps the top notes present even as the heart develops. The drydown belongs to the Mysore sandalwood. Creamy, warm, slightly sweet, it stretches the wear without ever becoming heavy. On most skin types the sandalwood holds for the full duration, keeping the tea and citrus in conversation underneath.
Cultural impact
Assam of India captures a region known for its tea production, where the distinctive character of local leaves has shaped regional traditions. Parfums Berdoues' interpretation of this terroir translates the sensory memory of the region into olfactory form, combining the bright citrus of French lemon with the earthy warmth of Indian tea and the creamy depth of Mysore sandalwood. This fragrance belongs to the Collection Grands Crus, which treats geography itself as a perfumery material, distilling the essence of specific places into wearable memories.
