Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Parfums Berdoues begins in 1902 when Guillaume Berdoues opened a hair‑dressing salon on the Rue de la Paix. According to Fragrantica, the young stylist created an amber Eau de Cologne that quickly attracted Parisian society. The success prompted him to register the name Berdoues as a perfume brand, laying the foundation for a family‑run business that would survive two world wars and the rise of modern cosmetics. In the 1920s the house expanded its range to include lighter colognes and floral extracts, reflecting the changing tastes of the interwar era. By the mid‑20th century, Berdoues joined forces with other family ventures to form Groupe Berdoues, a diversified group that manages fine fragrances, cosmetics and retail concepts. The group kept the original atelier in Paris while opening a modest production site in the outskirts of the capital, allowing the brand to maintain control over formulation and quality. A notable moment arrived in 2017 when the house participated in the Esxence trade show in Milan; a recorded interview highlighted the brand’s commitment to preserving artisanal techniques while embracing new olfactory research. Recent years have seen a renewed focus on limited‑edition releases, such as the 1902 Jasmin launched in 2024 and the 2025 Musc Blanc & Lin, each positioned as a contemporary reinterpretation of the house’s historic DNA. Throughout its more than 120‑year journey, Parfums Berdoues has remained anchored in French perfume tradition, yet it consistently seeks fresh narratives that resonate with today’s discerning noses.
Parfums Berdoues frames its creative vision around the idea that a fragrance should tell a story rooted in place and memory. The house believes that scent can capture a moment – a sunrise over the Riviera, the scent of orange blossoms in a Provençal garden, or the quiet comfort of freshly laundered linen. This narrative approach guides the selection of raw materials, which are sourced from regions that echo the intended mood. The brand values transparency, so it often references the origin of key ingredients, whether they are Mediterranean bergamot, Madagascan vanilla or Tahitian monoi. Collaboration with perfumers is treated as a dialogue rather than a commission; the house encourages the creator to explore personal memories while respecting the brand’s heritage palette. Sustainability also informs the philosophy: packaging choices aim to reduce waste, and the company prefers suppliers who practice responsible farming. By marrying respect for classic French perfumery with a willingness to experiment, Parfums Berdoues seeks to offer scents that feel both familiar and unexpected, inviting wearers to embark on a personal olfactory journey.
