The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Karl Lagerfeld's fragrance house, founded in France in 1978, is known for minimalist bottles and stark, contrasting compositions that echo the designer's precision. Bois de Cypres was created for the Les Parfums Matieres collection, aiming to capture the crisp clarity of a Mediterranean cypress grove at dawn. Perfumer Alexandra Carlin blended bright mandarin and lemon with a warm cardamom accent to echo the brand's love of contrast.
The note selection reflects a deliberate balance between brightness and depth. Mandarin and lemon offer Mediterranean clarity, while cardamom introduces the brand's signature contrast. Cypres and water mint create an aromatic core that feels both natural and refined, and the cashmeran-clary sage-vetiver trio grounds the composition in sophisticated warmth. Each layer earns its place.
The evolution
The scent journey moves from the energizing citrus burst of mandarin and lemon to the aromatic intensity of cypress, water mint, and lavender. This progression mirrors a walk deeper into a Mediterranean grove as morning light intensifies, with the herbal and green notes growing more defined. The drydown softens into cashmeran's embrace while clary sage and vetiver add grounded earthiness, suggesting the cool shade beneath ancient trees.
Cultural impact
Part of the Les Parfums Matières line, Bois de Cyprès quickly found a niche among fans of green‑fresh aromatics. Its citrus‑cypress core is often compared to Dsquared²’s Green Wood (2018), yet the inclusion of water‑mint and cashmeran gives it a cooler, more contemporary edge. Wearers praise its suitability for office wear and spring outings, while some note the synthetic edge of cashmeran. Overall, it secured a spot as a versatile, understated staple in the 2023 fragrance landscape.
