The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vincent Ricord built Topaz around the idea of a promise in mineral form. The gemstone's symbolic weight, protection, bonds, enduring warmth, served as the framework for every choice in the composition. Each note was selected not for novelty but for purpose, building toward something that holds its character through time. The house's approach treats fragrance as story, and Topaz carries that narrative from the first spray to the final drydown.
The opening's black lemon and rum capture both the brightness of the fruit and the warmth of its spirit, a pairing that signals intent immediately. Elderflower and orange blossom refine the sharper notes without dulling them, a careful balance. The heart uses blackcurrant CO2 for tart depth that keeps the composition grounded, with lemon continuing the citrus thread and cedarwood providing woody counterweight to the rose's florals. The base relies on ambroxan and ambergris for a mineral warmth that avoids typical amber and vanilla territory, with cashmere wood adding creamy softness that extends the drydown without heavy sweetness.
The evolution
Topaz begins boldly, the black lemon and rum cutting through with electric sharpness and spirit-like warmth. Elderflower and orange blossom temper the acidity without softening it, keeping the opening sharp but refined. The heart introduces blackcurrant CO2 for tart depth, paired with lemon that continues quietly from the opening and rose that adds powdery floral nuance. Cedarwood arrives to ground the heart, preventing it from drifting into sweetness. The drydown shifts the composition entirely: ambroxan and ambergris create a mineral, slightly oceanic warmth that departs from standard sweet amber, while musk and cashmere wood extend the base into a skin-close presence that feels intimate and enduring.
Cultural impact
Topaz lands in a specific niche: the Kajal house signature of material authenticity and narrative depth, translated into a fruity-floral Oriental that doesn't apologize for being sweet. The cassis and candied lemon heart distinguishes it from many amber-heavy flankers in the category. Wearers describe it as the scent of someone who walks into a room and doesn't need to announce themselves, present but not projecting, warm but not loud. It performs particularly well in cooler months and evening settings, where the ambergris and musk base comes into its own.
