The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name is the story. Space Rhapsody arrives fully formed from a brand narrative about Lou's Satellite of Love, David standing up with an idea while earth was dying. A musical composition composed from space to earth, awakening mimosas, mint, and pine. The result saved nature. That's the operative word, operatic, theatrical, absurd in the best way. Perfumer Marie Duchêne built this 2019 unisex fragrance around a collision: mint-maritime pine at the opening, mimosa and cedar at the heart, amber and musk at the close. It translates an impossible narrative into something you can actually wear.
The real interest lies in what Space Rhapsody refuses to be. A green fragrance? Yes, but one that doesn't apologize for its ambitions. The mint-maritime pine opening isn't subtle, it arrives cold and doesn't wait for permission. What follows is the mimosa, a yellow floral that smells like sunshine filtered through something green and alive. Combined with cedar and jasmine, it softens the pine without erasing it. The ambergris and civet in the base do something interesting: they push the fragrance toward animalic warmth without ever becoming aggressive. This is a fragrance that knows what it is.
The evolution
The opening announces itself without apology. Maritime pine arrives cold, resinous, almost medicinal in its clarity. Black pepper adds a clean spice. Peppermint cuts through with mentholated precision. Then, somewhere around the thirty-minute mark, the pine begins to soften, and mimosa arrives. Golden. Unexpected. The sweetness doesn't overwhelm; it balances the evergreen foundation still present underneath. Cedar and jasmine layer in quietly. Patchouli provides the earthy counterweight. The mint doesn't fully disappear, it lingers as a cool undertone throughout the heart, keeping the florals from going heavy. By the drydown, ambergris and sandalwood settle close to the skin. Amber adds warmth. Musk softens. Civet brings an animalic edge that keeps the base from becoming too clean. This is where the fragrance becomes intimate. It doesn't announce itself from across the room. It rewards proximity.
Cultural impact
The mint and maritime pine combination creates a distinctive aromatic signature. These green, aromatic notes interact in a way that feels both crisp and grounded, offering something that stands apart from more conventional fragrance choices. The drydown reveals amber and mimosa, their warmth emerging gradually without settling into predictable patterns. This transition from cool, sharp top notes to a softer, warmer base creates an unexpected arc that feels intentional rather than accidental.
