Why it exists.
The beginning
Vieux Papier arrived in 2024 as part of GP Fragrances' Dreamer Collection, composed by Renato Lopena Jr. The name translates simply: old paper. The concept doesn't point to a place or a landscape. It points to an object, something held rather than visited. The feeling of aged pages carries a peculiar gravity, the quiet weight of fibers gone brittle with age, the stillness of a room where nothing has been disturbed in years, the faint dryness that clings to sheets nobody has turned in a long time. The composition treats that sensation as its central subject, translating the texture of paper, the cool hush of a closed room, and the soft friction of aged materials into something wearable. It's a study in restraint, a fragrance that asks you to lean in rather than step back.
What makes the composition unusual is its restraint with materials that usually shout. Bergamot and juniper berries could cut sharp, but here they serve as texture, the cool draft through an old room. Rosemary and cinnamon suggest incense without committing to it. The Philippine vetiver sits deep in the base, earthy and rooted, while suede and oakmoss reach for a leather-and-dust accord that reads as aged rather than new. Each ingredient holds back just enough to let the others breathe.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the juniper. It lands cool and botanical, sharpened by bergamot into something bracing. Rosemary threads through, herbal and slightly camphorous, giving the opening a sense of motion, like air moving through an open window. As the composition settles, the juniper steps back and cinnamon arrives, but quietly, the way warm wood releases its scent when you press your palm against it. Lavender softens the transition, not soapy but dry, the lavender of linen rather than perfume counters. Once the fragrance settles into its heart, suede begins to surface alongside a dusty oakmoss, patchouli adding just enough bitterness to keep things from turning sweet. The Philippine vetiver arrives last in the base, smoky and rooted, and it lingers through the drydown. What's left hours later is a quiet blend of suede, oakmoss, and that grounded vetiver.
