The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Named for the Hyades star cluster, mythology's rain-bringers, celestial heralds that mark transitions. Paolo Terenzi drew from that sense of cleansing, of one atmosphere giving way to another. The fragrance opens with cool clarity: Bulgarian lavender and Calabrian bergamot, star anise adding aniseedy sharpness. Then it shifts. Brazilian pineapple introduces a synthetic-fruity sweetness that shouldn't work but does, tilting the composition toward something warmer, more human. A unisex fragrance that refuses to stay in one place.
The synthetic-fruity classification isn't a criticism here, it's the point. Brazilian pineapple at the top interacts with Vietnamese star anise to create something that reads as both sweet and spicy, a duality that keeps the opening from settling into predictability. Meanwhile, Egyptian geranium and Italian green apple in the heart keep the composition from becoming too heavy as it warms. The Bulgarian rose absolute provides a floral backbone that stays quiet, supportive rather than dominant, rose as structure, not centerpiece. Ambergris at the base anchors everything with its characteristic mineral, slightly saline warmth, tying the cool opening to the woody close.
The evolution
The first minutes belong to Bulgarian lavender, green, herbal, almost sharp before the Calabrian bergamot softens it. Star anise arrives early, its cool spice a bridge between the citrus and the unexpected: Brazilian pineapple announcing itself with a synthetic sweetness that feels daring rather than cloying. The sillage doesn't project aggressively. This is a fragrance that requires proximity. Ginger builds in the heart, warmth replacing cool. Geranium and Bulgarian rose settle alongside green apple, their sweetness tempering the spice rather than fighting it. By the drydown, the synthetic fruit has faded. Ambergris takes over, mineral, intimate, slightly salty. Tonka bean and musk wrap everything in softness. Cedar and sandalwood provide the warmth that lingers close to the skin, intimate rather than announced. The longevity holds through a full workday. The projection stays moderate throughout.
Cultural impact
Part of the Titans collection, Hyades continues Giardino Benessere's exploration of mythological themes. Paolo Terenzi's generational craft knowledge, 39 fragrances under his own name, shapes every composition. The house treats scent as meditative practice, positioning fragrance as something to be lived rather than displayed. Hyades fits that philosophy: a fragrance that rewards patience and proximity over projection.
