The beginning
Lovely Queer carries a name that refuses to be neutral in the quiet sense. It is identity-forward, declarative, and deliberately situated within LGBTQ+ language. Released in 2022, it shares catalog space with Iel and Enby, two companion releases from the same brand. The nose behind it is Majda Bekkali, a perfumer whose own artistic compositions have earned attention outside of commissioned work. The result is an Oriental Floral that opens like a drink and dries down like a memory of one. There's a playfulness in the way it presents itself, an unapologetic warmth that doesn't try to soften its edges or apologize for its presence. It wears with confidence, reading less like a traditional fragrance category and more like an attitude captured in liquid form.
What makes the composition unusual is the choice of Rum CO2 alongside rhubarb and sweet lime at the top. Rum CO2 is a relatively modern extraction method that captures the boozy, fermented warmth of distilled sugarcane without the harsh alcohol burn. Combined with rhubarb's tart green character and the lift of sweet lime, it produces an opening that reads like a cocktail rather than a traditional cologne accord. The sweetness here is structural rather than decorative, anchoring the brightness of the citrus while adding depth underneath.
The evolution

There's an almost effervescent quality to the opening, a fizzing brightness that demands attention. By the twenty-minute mark, the citrus has receded and the tropical heart steps forward. Frangipani and passion fruit arrive together, creamy and almost suntan-lotion-like in a way that feels intentional rather than accidental. Ylang-ylang adds a dense, buttery yellow floral richness while rose threads through without ever becoming the star. Lovely Queer draws attention for pairing a politically explicit name with an unexpectedly wearable composition. The fragrance opens with a rum-and-rhubarb accord that reads more like a mixed drink than a traditional top note structure, and that opening alone sets the tone for what follows.
