The beginning
Sakamoto 龙一 arrived in 2025 from Fukudo 浮香堂, a house building contemporary fragrances from East Asian aromatic traditions. The name itself carries an unmistakable gravity. Sakamoto is a Japanese surname with cultural heft, and the kanji 龙一 pair dragon and one in a combination that signals arrival and primacy, a name constructed to command attention. Fukudo handed the composition to Nathalie Gracia-Cetto, the perfumer behind this particular release. The brief seems clear. Build the smell of the moment a storm has just passed through a forest. Rain still pooling in moss. Earth exhaling. Green that hasn't dried out yet. No citrus sparkle. No amber warmth to rescue you. Just the honest aftermath of weather. What's striking is how little the fragrance wants to please.
What's unusual here is the restraint. Most petrichor compositions lean on a single ozonic or aquatic molecule for the rain effect, then bury it under vetiver and patchouli to feel grounded. Fukudo and Gracia-Cetto let the rain note sit on top. Cryptomeria, Japanese cedar, brings a clean woodiness that reads more like wet timber than dry lumber. Vetiver grounds the heart without dragging it into smoke. The base is moss and soil, unapologetically damp, refusing to sweeten into anything resembling a mainstream green fragrance. It's an exercise in what you leave out.
The evolution
The opening is immediate. Green notes and rain water hit at once, no ramp-up, no topper. Within the first few minutes, the composition reads as the olfactory equivalent of stepping outside right after thunder has passed: charged, wet, metallic at the edges. The cryptomeria surfaces not as a dry wood but as something freshly cut, still weeping resin, the kind of green that stains your fingers. The vetiver arrives quietly underneath, pulling the composition toward earth without announcing itself. By the time a full half hour has passed, the rain hasn't faded.
