The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Love Express arrived as Express's debut women's fragrance, a scent meant to capture irresistible allure through an immediate, high-gloss register. Honorine Blanc composed it. The structure plays out across three deliberate tiers: lush fruit at the opening, a white-flower heart at the middle, and a warm creamy base where sandalwood, musk, and vanilla do the slow seduction. Michael Weiss, speaking around the launch, noted the name felt right because the brand was marking its 30th anniversary that same year, framing Love Express as part of a larger celebratory moment. The development partnership with Batallure Beauty gave the project its production shape and helped translate the creative brief into a finished bottle. The name does the work.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the orchestration across its three acts. The opening throws four distinct fruit notes at once, blackberry, blackcurrant, mandarin, pineapple, each contributing a different facet of sweetness. Blackberry runs dark and jammy, blackcurrant brings a sharp green tartness, and the mandarin-pineapple pair tilts the whole accord toward something almost effervescent. The heart pulls a different lever entirely, trading sweetness for powder through iris, jasmine, lily of the valley, and tiare, a tropical white floral that adds sun-warmed skin to the mix.
The evolution
The first fifteen minutes belong to the fruit cocktail. Blackberry hits first, jammy and dark-edged, then blackcurrant cuts through with that tart green sharpness, and the mandarin-pineapple pair brightens everything into something almost sparkling. The accord reads bold, almost border-line aggressive in its sweetness. Then somewhere around the thirty-minute mark the white florals arrive and the whole composition bends toward something quieter. Iris brings the powder. Jasmine gives it warmth. Lily of the valley and tiare soften the edges into something creamy and sun-touched. The transition isn't subtle; it really does feel like a different fragrance for a while. By hour two, the fruit is mostly memory and the base has taken over. Sandalwood adds a soft woody hum, vanilla warms into a skin-like creaminess, and musk pulls everything close to the body.
Cultural impact
Love Express landed as Express's first women's fragrance, a debut that set the tone for everything the house would release afterward. The fruity-floral template, with its bright opening and creamy, powdery close, gave the brand an instantly recognizable signature. The name itself did heavy lifting in retail spaces, where a short, declarative title reads cleanly on a tester strip and on a shelf. The composition leans into sweetness without apology, offering a wearable take on the genre that feels playful rather than precious.
