The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Eglija Vaitkevice, the perfumer behind Afternoon Tea, approached Exaltatum with a specific goal: translate the ritual of English tea service into scent. The London house, founded in 2016, blends classic French composition with contemporary lift, and Vaitkevice leaned into this aesthetic. Working with Darjeeling leaf extracts as a foundation, she built outward, adding citrus brightness and floral complexity. The challenge was balancing literalism with artistry, creating something that smelled like the ritual without becoming a gimmick. The result pairs mate with jasmine tea, a choice that grounds the composition in authenticity rather than imitation.
Vaitkevice's philosophy centers on authenticity of experience over novelty of materials. For Afternoon Tea, she selected mate for its bitter-herbal character, a departure from the green tea or black tea accords common in fragrance. Champa flower was chosen to add exotic sweetness without overwhelming the tea foundation. The pairing rationale is simple: mate and jasmine tea share a bitter-sweet duality that creates complexity without contradiction. Vetiver grounds this in earthiness, preventing the composition from floating into pure sweetness. The result is a fragrance that smells like a ritual, not a flavor profile.
The evolution
The opening begins with bergamot and lemon, sharp and citrused, but honey pomelo quickly introduces a honeyed quality that softens the citrus. Magnolia adds cream, and tea appears early, establishing the fragrance's subject. As the scent evolves, mate takes center stage, its bitter-herbal character distinguishing this from typical tea fragrances. Champa flower adds exotic sweetness, while jasmine tea contributes aromatic depth. The heart is warm and slightly intoxicating, a brewed quality that feels intimate rather than performative. The drydown arrives quietly: musk wraps the composition close to skin, vanilla adds warmth, and vetiver provides an earthy, smoky finish that feels like the dregs of a well-steeped cup.
Cultural impact
Since its 2024 debut, Afternoon Tea has become a talking point among collectors who appreciate a scent that translates a British tea ceremony into perfume. It’s often mentioned alongside other tea‑inspired releases, praised for its clear structure and the way the mate note adds an unexpected green punch. Wearers note its suitability for both casual brunches and refined evenings, cementing its place as a versatile modern classic.
